{"id":309,"date":"2017-07-07T23:31:12","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T23:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jamesvanpelt.com\/?p=309"},"modified":"2020-08-15T16:39:51","modified_gmt":"2020-08-15T16:39:51","slug":"new-collection-the-experience-arcade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamesvanpelt.com\/?p=309","title":{"rendered":"New Collection: The Experience Arcade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-292\" src=\"https:\/\/jamesvanpelt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Experience-Arcade.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"621\" height=\"960\" data-wp-pid=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jamesvanpelt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Experience-Arcade.jpg 621w, https:\/\/jamesvanpelt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Experience-Arcade-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/>My fifth collection of short stories, <em>The Experience Arcade,\u00a0<\/em>will debut at World Fantasy in San Antonio in November.<\/p>\n<p>The collection consists of twenty-four of the thirty-five short stories that I have sold from my write-a-story-a-week-for-a-year that I started in 2015. \u00a0I&#8217;m trying some new approaches with this collection:<\/p>\n<p>First, every story has a brief teaser for the readers, sort of like what\u00a0<em>Analog<\/em> does for their short stories. \u00a0Second, every story has a postscript for writers and teachers that talks a little bit about the thinking that went into the writing of the stories.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if the additional material will make the book more interesting or not. \u00a0I do know that when I was young, I never read introductions or epilogues. \u00a0As an older reader, I find the extra information very valuable. \u00a0We&#8217;ll see how the experiment in format goes.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also creating a web page with support material specifically for teachers who would like to use any of the stories (or the entire collection!) in class. \u00a0You can see what I&#8217;ve done so far by clicking on\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/jamesvanpelt.com\/?page_id=262\">The Experience Arcade: A Teacher&#8217;s Guide<\/a><\/em> in the menu at the top of the page.<\/p>\n<p>My experience on how best to promote strong sales that I learned from my previous books isn&#8217;t very helpful, I&#8217;m afraid. \u00a0My first collection,\u00a0<em>Strangers and Beggars<\/em>, and my first novel,\u00a0<em>Summer of the Apocalypse<\/em>, did well. \u00a0The sales on the other books have been hard to graph. \u00a0I can&#8217;t see a pattern, and I don&#8217;t know why some books do better than others (other than the obvious that maybe some books are just, well, better).<\/p>\n<p>We will see.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My fifth collection of short stories, The Experience Arcade,\u00a0will debut at World Fantasy in San Antonio in November.
